BUILDING A PENGUIN

Paul Brockie lives at Albany on Auckland's North Shore , New Zealand. He is building a John Welsford Penguin and has sent us a series of photographs which follow the building sequence pretty common to John's designs.

Fig 1. The bottom panel set up on its building jig, with the keel hog and chine logs in place and the centreboard slot cut. She is ready for the bulkheads to be erected. You can see the prefabricated bulkhead units against the wall on the right.

Fig 2. Working aft from the bow, Paul has the bulkheads stood up back to the aft end of the main cabin.
The centrecase is in place and there will be a good feeling of her shape.

Fig 3 All the bulkheads up, transom on, and the first of the planks and stringers in place. By leaving some of the stringers out Paul has given himself much more room to work. This photo gives a good visual explanation of how the bulkheads form much of the interior framework leaving only the fore and aft surfaces to install.

Fig 4. All planked up and the cockpit floor in place. You can see the galley bench to the forward port side in the main cabin. The quarter berths painted white and the transom finished including the cutouts for the tiller and the outboard motor (just).

Fig 5. Upside down for finishing and painting. The ballast casting is not yet in place.

Fig 6. The Boat. Hard to get nice photos in such a small space but you can see the shape and size quite well.

For pictures of the rigs you can fit to Penguin look here!!!

Penguin plans are available from John Welsford. The boat can be built as a centreboarder or bilge keeler. Cockpit variations include those for cruising comfort or with reduced volume for coastal cruising.
