On the left the crews seating postion has proven just right. The centerboard winch is under this end. There is a small 'compartment' above it which takes a kids sand bucket
which is my piss pot. I can reach it from the cabin at night and it is there within easy reach when sailing. Amazing how many men have been found drowned still holding onto their dick as they were when they fell of the stern while taking a leak.
On the right is another crew seat which has to be smaller due to the offset hatch. It has proven more than adequate and you can get your back into the corner with your feet on the opposite seat and be very very comfortable. The black dots..... indicators where the two sheet winches were put.
Some would say you could take a bit out of the side decks but when you need them they are just the right width. No walking the tightrope when working on the sails, getting out of the dinghy etc.
You can just see those drop leaf cockpit seats in the up postion and the t shape after end of the cockpit. There is a lazarette too. Now there is debate about the benefits of taking the cockpit right out to the transom or having a lazarette. Having had the oppoortunty to remove the lazarette I am really pleased with myself I left things where they were.
James the outboard lives there and I carry a bit of gear I might need in a hurry behind that hatch. That includes my lifejacket, a couple of flares, throw line, tow line etc.
I would like to incorporate some space to clear the outboards petrol tank around here but have not got my head around the problem yet. Problem is the lazarette is open into the boat and any petrol fumes would find their way into the cabin bilge. I noted on the engine page that I would lke the engine to come more inboard and some provision for incorporating the petrol tank stowage in their too. I suppose I could install a proper petrol tank.
The offset main hatch might not find favour but I have always found it practical and it does generate some very practical useable space at the back of the cabin.
That crutch for the boom is a godsend but I am thinking of building a boom gallows. A very practical device for the single hander.
You probably have the drift by now...... I love this cockpit..... the coamings are high enough for my hips to be up against them when standing and I feel real safe. And I sail standing up quite a lot........ Its real cool.
